Air circulation pit furnaces are installed with the opening at or just above ground level and run at up to 650 °C. At these temperatures heat moves mainly by convection, so air is circulated inside the retort to keep temperature even.
They are used for non-ferrous alloys, tempering of ferrous alloys after hardening, stress relieving after welding and forming, and ageing. They also suit controlled-atmosphere processes.
