In an elevator (raising) hearth furnace the charge sits on a hearth that rises into the heating chamber. It moves with very little vibration, which makes it right for brittle or delicate material and for charges that reach a molten state.
The furnace stands on a support structure and the hearth is moved by hydraulics or a ball screw. High-alumina refractories handle the top temperatures, with low-voltage high-current transformers supplying power. Platinum or ceramic crucibles can be provided for the charge.
